Job Description
The Summer Camp Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a summer camp program, ensuring a safe, fun, and enriching experience for all campers. This leadership role requires exceptional organizational, communication, and managerial skills to coordinate camp activities, supervise staff, and maintain a positive, supportive environment for children. The Camp Director will report to the Recreation Program Manager and will work closely with other camp staff and stakeholders to achieve program goals, manage resources, and ensure adherence to all safety and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will be passionate about youth development, have previous experience in camp or recreational management, and be dedicated to fostering an inclusive, engaging environment.
The hiring salary for this seasonal position begins at $22 per hour. Position Responsibilities Program Management. Oversee all aspects of camp operations, including planning, coordination, and execution of daily activities, special events, and field trips. Ensure that all camp activities align with the camp's mission and values, promoting a positive, supportive atmosphere for campers and staff.
Leadership. Lead and manage camp staff, providing clear direction, guidance, and mentorship throughout the summer. Maintain strong relationships with campers, staff, parents, and camp stakeholders, addressing concerns or issues promptly and professionally. Set clear goals for camper engagement and achievement, adjusting programming as needed to meet the needs of diverse campers.
Staff Training & Management. Recruit, train, and supervise camp counselors and support staff, ensuring that they understand their roles and responsibilities. Facilitate regular team meetings and in-service trainings to review camp activities, provide feedback, and ensure alignment with camp objectives. Monitor staff performance and provide constructive feedback, fostering a positive and professional work environment. Ensure all staff comply with camp policies, safety protocols, and regulations.
Health & Safety. Oversee the health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff, ensuring that camp operates in accordance with state and local health and safety regulations. Implement emergency procedures and protocols as necessary, including first aid, medical emergencies, and crisis situations. Ensure that all camp facilities and equipment are safe, well-maintained, and properly utilized.
Communication & Customer Service. Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, guardians, and camp stakeholders, addressing inquiries, concerns, and feedback in a timely and professional manner. Develop and distribute regular camp updates to parents, including schedules, activities, and important announcements. Coordinate with the camp office on registration, billing, and camper health records.
Administration & Operational Duties. Manage camp budgets and expenses, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and within budget. Maintain accurate records of camper attendance, incident reports, and other documentation required for regulatory compliance. Collaborate with camp management to plan and execute end-of-season evaluations, identifying areas for improvement for future programs.
Education and Experience Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in Education, Recreation, Sports Management, or related field is preferred.
- Two to three years of experience working with school-age children, coordinating youth programs, or related leadership roles is required. Experience in camp operations, staff management, or organizing recreational activities is strongly preferred.
- CPR and First Aid certification required (or the ability to obtain prior to camp start).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills. This requires the ability to work effectively in a team environment, and have a strong desire to positively impact children's lives.
- Able to handle basic first aid situations and emergencies. Able to make decisions quickly and remain calm.
- The ability to pass a pre-employment fingerprint background investigation and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a camp counselor or other similar role.
- Experience in specific camp activities such as sports, arts, or nature-based programming.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills and administrative tasks in relation to the position.
Work Schedule This is a full-time, seasonal position with employment running from March to mid-August. Must be available to be scheduled five days a week (Monday-Friday).
