Job Description

The Quarantine Aquarist (II or Senior) is responsible for the the care of aquatic animals throughout the quarantine process at the New England Aquarium's Quincy Animal Care Center in Quincy, MA. In addition to providing essential care and administering quarantine protocols that comply with both organizational and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) best practices, this role is responsible for maintenance of all assigned systems and support areas. This role works with a variety of taxonomic groups but focuses primarily on marine teleosts, invertebrates, and elasmobranch fishes. The position will also lead and/or assist with operational tasks including animal transports and data management.

This is a full-time regular, on-site position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday. The typical hours are 8am-4:30pm with a 30-minute meal period, but may require occasional weekends, holidays, some nights, and emergency response at all hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Primarily responsible for daily care of assigned exhibits, holding systems, support spaces, and life support systems according to the standards set forth by NEAQ as well as AZA. May help to develop new protocols as appropriate and apply knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and animal biology to advance husbandry techniques as appropriate.
  2. Makes daily observations of animals for health assessment according to the established norms of the animal's behavior and appearance. In conjunction with the Animal Health Department, identifies common diseases for the animals within the collection, establishes appropriate dietary regime, administers medications/supplements, and conducts quarantines.
  3. Maintains written and electronic records and submits entries via NEAQ's specimen database system TRACKSĀ©. Typical entries include accessions, dispositions, moves, behaviors, mortalities, and LSS maintenance in accordance with proper husbandry practices and institutional policy. Supports junior staff in accurate record keeping and adherence to institutional policy.
  4. Performs routine animal welfare assessments and helps to develop appropriate action responses to assure the highest standards of animal care are met.
  5. In conjunction with the Environmental Quality Department, manages water quality and environmental parameters in assigned exhibits and holding tanks. Analyzes results and takes corrective action as needed.
  6. Applies responsible population management practices in assisting with making recommendations during the annual collection planning exercise, in addition to helping facilitate acquisition and disposition of animals.
  7. Develops, implements, and adjusts strategies to effectively meet the behavioral needs of assigned animals including enrichment and operant conditioning.
  8. Manages life support systems and participates in or leads the design, upgrade, and installation of such systems. Supports the growth of junior staff in system design and problem solving.
  9. May need to demonstrate proficiency as a SCUBA diver, collector, and transport driver.
  10. Provides alternate coverage for other Aquarists and is available for cross-training as assigned.
  11. May be routinely encouraged to engage with the public through in person or virtual presentations.
  12. Supervises interns and volunteers, including training, scheduling, and performance management.
  13. Serves as a mentor and resource for less experienced staff, interns, and volunteers.
  14. May assist with or make recommendations pertaining to animal collection planning and the design and construction of new exhibits and holding systems.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree with a concentration in science preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of aquarist or related experience is required, with a focus on marine animal quarantines preferred. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years related experience to be considered for the Senior Aquarist level position.
  • Mentorship and/or leadership experience on an animal care team a plus.
  • Possession of an internationally recognized SCUBA diving certification required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Foundational knowledge of aquarium water chemistry, quarantine procedures, and mechanical components of aquarium life support systems required.
  • Understanding of the biological and chemical processes that occur in filtration systems required.
  • Ability to obtain Medical Examiner's authorization to SCUBA dive in accordance with NEAQ Diving Program.
  • Valid Driver's License and the willingness to drive a 24' Box Truck.
  • Ability to obtain Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Motor Carrier Safety Regulation (49 CFR 391.41-391.49).
  • Broad knowledge of the Aquarium field, including animal husbandry, mechanical systems, collecting techniques, and exhibit design.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Good judgment and strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
