Job Description

Associate Attorney, Criminal Defense Law | Grand Rapids, MI

SBBL Law is a leading criminal defense law firm in West Michigan. Led by a team of former federal prosecutors, former FBI Special Agents, and former Army JAG Officers, SBBL Law possesses unrivaled expertise on how investigations and prosecutions work from an inside perspective. Having spent decades building cases for the government, our lead attorneys leverage that experience to help defend those charged with criminal offenses. We represent clients in state criminal cases throughout Michigan and in federal criminal cases nationwide. We also have a Title IX practice representing students and staff in sexual assault and harassment cases; a police defense practice representing police officers charged with misconduct allegations; and a growing civil practice involving a variety of matters.

SBBL Law attorneys are relatable, empathetic, innovative, and professional. Our attorneys' commitment to excellence has earned the firm a reputation for achieving remarkable results.

We are looking to hire an associate attorney licensed in Michigan with 1-3 years of legal experience. This position will focus primarily on criminal defense and criminal appeals.

Job Description

SBBL Law is expanding, having grown from a two-person partnership in 2011 to a 17-person team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff today. We are seeking associate attorneys with the following experience and attributes:

  • JD;
  • Licensed to practice law in Michigan;
  • An exceptional academic record;
  • Courtroom experience is a bonus but not required (e.g., firm, internship, prosecutor's office, JAG Corps, law enforcement, or criminal defense);
  • Strong analytical abilities and writing skills;
  • A positive, can-do attitude;
  • Unflappable friendliness and professionalism;
  • Proactivity and an instinct to ask how to help;
  • A team-oriented mindset;
  • The ability to think quickly, adapt, manage multiple clients at a time, and overcome challenges in a fast-paced environment; and
  • A willingness to learn, improve, and both seek and accept feedback.

This position is in-person in Grand Rapids, Michigan. SBBL Law is headquartered in a beautifully-renovated historic bank building in the heart of downtown, steps from both the Kent County and federal courthouses. Associates are also permitted to work from home as needed. However, associates must live within commuting-distance from Grand Rapids and are expected to come to the office more frequently than they work from home.

Full-time employees at SBBL Law receive a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, 401K matching, paid time off for personal use as well as federal holidays, and other benefits.

If you fit this description, let us know. Please highlight as many of the bulleted experience and attributes above as you can in your cover letter, include your resume, and provide two writing samples (preferably including at least one brief you filed in court, but a law school writing sample or article you authored will also work). Please send these materials to attorney Tessa Muir at tessa@sbbllaw.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
