QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Washington State certification with appropriate endorsement(s) in Special Education and as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist Experience with children, ages 3-21 years old, in public schools. Meet state requirements relative to assignment The Orientation & Mobility Specialist is supervised by the Executive Director of Special Services in compliance with the policies of the Port Townsend School District. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES The main role of the Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O & M) is to facilitate services, evaluation, and consultation for those students with vision impairment who qualify (or may qualify) for O & M services. Work in partnership with families and classroom teachers on IEP development and implementation to achieve maximum student success. Collaborate with other team members on the MDT to complete referrals, assessments, make recommendations, design intervention plans and coordinate the implementation of plans. Collaborate with Special Education staff (including itinerant providers and paraprofessionals) to provide quality educational programs for identified students, assess and monitor student progress, evaluate and modify programs, participate in IEPs, consult with staff to ensure that students are making progress and accessing FAPE, train staff, and demonstrate flexibility in working in a changing educational environment. Collaborate with staff to ensure the smooth transition of students moving between programs. Evaluate students as part of the Child find process. Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment for promoting effective student behavior and success. Maintain and submit information/records including student progress. Act as an effective consult to fellow colleagues in the district, thereby assuring and furthering understanding of blindness/low vision, and the environmental impact on the educational setting. Understand assessment and instruction in relevant subject matter. Understand child development. Have effective communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to strengthen job related competencies. Building independence and success in the school environment. Orienting students to unfamiliar environments. Instructing in efficient use of low vision for movement, Teaching efficient use of low vision devices. Teaching use of mobility tools. Applications for this position will be accepted until filled. Note: Salary range will be increased for the 2025-26 school year, based on the legislative IPD (Implicit Price Deflator) percentage. Salary range will be pro-rated based on the .1 FTE positon.

Retirement is through the WA State Department of Retirement, plans available: TERS Plan 2 or TERS Plan 3. Note: Benefits may not be available due to the limited number of hours in this position.
